MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • As a prerequisite for police academy attendance, appointees will be required to pass a thorough medical and psychiatric examination. Any psychological, medical or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer, cause the recruit to be a hazard to himself/herself or others, or become aggravated as a result of performance of these duties, will be cause for rejection.
  • Ability to follow rules and procedures.
  • Ability to read with reasonable speed and understanding so as to absorb written information.
  • Must possess (60) college credits or two (2) years of active military service.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Acceptance into this program is highly competitive. Candidates who are selected are enrolled directly into the regular 24-week Basic Course for Police Officers. Application costs, admission expenses, tuition and other fees are paid for by the alternate route candidate.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants will be ranked and offered enrollment in the Basic Course for Police Officers according to a combination of written scores, physical test scores and interview rankings (mock hiring panels).

HIRING PROCESS:

A written examination will be conducted by the NJ State Association of Chiefs of Police on February 27, 2024. Candidates who pass the written portion will progress to the physical fitness assessment. Candidates who pass both of these will be interviewed by law enforcement panels coordinated by the Passaic County Police Chief's Association. A cumulative ranking will be calculated, generating an eligibility list. Candidates on the eligibility list will remain on such until the list is exhausted or 2 years, whichever comes first. Prior to entering a Police Class, candidates will be required to pass a Background Investigation, drug testing and meet NJ Police Training Commission Standards while enrolled.
