Job Announcement

The Montana Law Enforcement Academy Bureau Chief (Program Manager) is one of six managers within the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that reports directly to the Division Administrator.

The primary function of this position is the management and supervision of the law enforcement academy.

The Montana Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) trains all peace officers for their POST basic certification or legal equivalency. This also includes instruction for Corrections/Detention officer Basic Course (CDOB), and Public Service Communicators. With training evolving (remote learning, and innovative educational partnerships), the Bureau Chief is expected to lead the change.

The incumbent supervises all training officers and other administrative support staff; develops and manages statewide basic and specialized training programs; evaluates issues of performance and residency for approximately 1,000 students annually; and is responsible for the overall development, coordination, and oversight of approximately 60 basic and professional training programs offered at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy. Training programs ranging in length from four hours to twelve weeks are conducted throughout the year.

The incumbent is responsible for campus infrastructure and facilities, to include dormitories, classrooms, gymnasium, maintenance shops, fleet vehicles, equipment, and other training sites utilized by the academy. Responsibilities include ongoing facility upgrades, necessary improvements, monitoring of grants and awards, budgeting, and strategic planning. This position also involves fiscal responsibilities/assistance with development and management of the budget. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all areas and phases of operation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a specified field of expertise relevant to the program.
• Five years of dedicated job-related experience, law enforcement experience.
• Two years supervisory or lead worker experience.
• Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in instructional development, adult training or continuing education at a college, academy, or other institution of post-secondary education.
• Experience in personnel management and development of law enforcement and/or correctional programs.
• Proficient in problem solving and management of people.
