The Westborough Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of fulltime police officer.  

Applicants must have an Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; six months to one year of related experience and / or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Massachusetts Police Academy certification in accordance with MGL Ch. 41 is preferred.  

All appointments are subject to a physical and psychological examination as well as an extensive background investigation.

Summary: Enforces laws related to the protection of life and property, directs and controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbance of peace, and arrests violators by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Patrols assigned area on foot, by motorcycle, in patrol car, or on horseback to enforce laws, prevent and discover crimes, investigate crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints.

  • Answers radio-dispatched or citizens' requests for police services at the scene of accidents, domestic disputes, law violations, and peace disturbances.
  • Familiarizes self with beat and with persons living in area.
  • Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, and quells disturbances.
  • Locates, searches, detains, and arrests law violators, following recognized police procedures.
  • Interviews and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects. Gathers and preserves evidence.
  • Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.
  • Investigates causes and results of accidents.
  • Directs and controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations.
  • Enforces parking ordinances and motor vehicle laws in the patrol areas.
  • Reports dangerous and/or inconvenient conditions to the Supervisor..
  • Inspects public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Operates police communication and computer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information.
  • Attends community meetings to discuss crime prevention activities and crime problems.
  • Conducts thorough investigation of all offenses and incidents within the area of assignment and scope of activity. Collects evidence and records data which will aid in identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders, as well as the recovery of property.
  • Writes detailed incident, investigation, activity, and other reports.
  • Testifies in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations, and actions.
  • Communicates and  coordinates with superiors and fellow officers to facilitate teamwork and achievement of police objectives.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment in functional, presentable condition.
  • Serves or delivers warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately when so directed by a superior officer.
  • Remain on assigned route throughout tour of duty except when a police emergency necessitates a temporary absence, or when Officer-in-Charge or Dispatcher has issued authorization for a temporary absence.
  • Perform all duties of a dispatcher as needed.   (see Dispatcher job description P-1)

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities, unless acting as O.I.C.  O.I.C. assumes responsibilities of a Sergeant.

 

Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Massachusetts Police Academy certified in accordance with MGL Chapter 41 preferred.

 

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of in-house computers, LEAPS/CJIS computer, telephones, radios, Internet software; Microsoft Office software.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have a Massachusetts LTC (Class A). Must be CPR and First Responder certified. Must meet E-911 telecommunication requirements. Must be breath testing equipment and LEAPS/CJIS certified.

 

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of a diverse population. Maintain appropriate demeanor and appearance. Maintain a cognizant level of contemporary law enforcement technology, training and education and effective police operations. Perform dispatch duties.

 

Other Qualifications: Must wear prescribed uniform. Must wear prescribed traffic safety clothing and equipment when required.

The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. ,
