Summary:
- Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police, plans, organizes, and implements a canine and animal control program. Manages a dog pound; and enforces Connecticut State Dog Statutes, related laws and town ordinances.
- Examples of Specific Duties:
- Plans and organizes work according to authorized procedures.
- Maintains registry of licensed dogs on a computer-based information system; enters new registrations and reviews current registry for renewal through computer terminal.
- Responds to all dog and animal complaint calls. Investigates vicious, diseased, or stray dogs or animals.
- Patrols town for stray or unlicensed dogs; captures and removes stray or vicious dogs to dog pound. May issue summons to violators or make arrests.
- Arranges for return, adoption, or disposal of impounded dogs.
- Purchases materials and supplies for dog pound.
- Feeds and cares for impounded dogs, and receives and impounds dogs from the Town of Rocky Hill.
- Maintains public contact through news releases and speaking to school, civic, and animal care groups.
- Prepares and recommends a unit budget; receives and processes fees; and maintains necessary financial records.
- Works closely with Police Officers and the Town-Maintenance Division in removing injured or dead dogs and animals from town roads.
- Prepares narrative and statistical reports for the Chief of Police and State Canine Control officials.
Required Qualifications:
- Possession of a Class III Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
- Knowledge of canine and animal behavior, and techniques for caring for dogs.
- Administrative skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a high school education.
- Ability to apprehend and care for dogs, including ability to lift medium to heavy weights. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience in handling dogs and other animals, supplemented by course work in animal care.
