Our mission is to serve the community with pride and excellence. We strive to provide modern policing methods to partner with our residents to achieve a safe and secure place to live, work and play.
We are located in the western foothills approximately one hour from the New Hampshire border on U.S. Route 2. The Town of Rumford was first settled in 1779 by Jonathan Keyes. Rumford was the 123rd town in the District of Maine, which at that time was still part of Massachusetts. The original Charter was signed on February 21, 1800 making Rumford an official town. Rumford currently has a population of approximately 6,000 and borders one side of the Androscoggin River, while the town of Mexico, Maine borders the other.
Rumford is home to both an important paper industry and the Black Mountain of Maine ski resort. Originally called New Pennacook Plantation.
The area features four seasons of recreation, including skiing, snowboarding, snowmobile clubs, swimming, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing and ATV clubs
Rumford has its own ski area, Black Mountain of Maine, a major cross country ski competition center with high level meets held yearly. Black Mountain is a small non-profit area, supported by the town as well as by its own revenues, with moderate alpine and world-class Nordic skiing trails.
The Appalachian Trail passes within a few miles of town, and within Rumford’s borders are numerous popular day hike trails. Most notable perhaps is Whitecap.
