Basic Information:
The Wharton Borough Police Department patrols the Borough of Wharton and the Township of Mine Hill. We currently employ 23 full-time police officers, 1 special class II police officer and 1 special class III police officer. The department provides service to approximately 10,000 residents in a five-mile area of responsibility. Our area of responsibility covers sections of Interstate 80, State Highways 15 and 46.
Applicants may be appointed as special law enforcement officers in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146 et seq., for terms not exceeding one year. Such special law enforcement officers shall possess and exercise all the powers and duties provided by these statutes during their term in office, but shall not be members of the Police Department and shall not be entitled to tenure.
Minimum Requirements:
- Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 34.
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
- Be a high school graduate or possess a general equivalency degree.
- Have the ability to read, write and speak the English language clearly and intelligently.
- Be a U.S. Citizen and a resident of New Jersey.
- Ability to perform all of the duties and tasks of a police officer.
- No criminal history and of good moral character.
- NJ SLEO CLASS II PTC Certification not required, but accepted.
- Applicants currently enrolled in an Alternate Route Program and Alternate Route Program Graduates cannot apply for this Class II position.
- Must be able to pass the Wharton Police Department Physical Fitness Test for applicants.
- The first step of this selection process is a Physical Fitness Test.
The Wharton Police Department Physical Fitness Test will include a 1.5 Mile Run, Vertical Jump, Push Ups, Sit Ups, 300 Meter Sprint and Bench Press. Applicants must meet the minimum standards below in order to be scored with the applicant pool. Failure to meet the minimum standards below may result in automatic disqualification. Applicants who score in the top 50% on the Physical Fitness Test will be eligible to move on to the next stage of the hiring process. Applicants must bring and submit a completed and signed medical waiver form and an informed consent form in order to participate in the Physical Fitness Test on the date of the event. The forms will be available on PoliceApp.com.

Applicants who continue on in the hiring process must also successfully pass the following stages:

- Drug Testing
- Background investigation
- Medical examination
- Psychological screening
- Police Training Commission Pre-Academy Standard Testing, if necessary
- Police Academy Training, if necessary
