ENGLEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT

SLEO II

24 hrs per week (three 8 hour shifts per week)

Upon graduation from Special II Academy, the hourly rate is $26.60 per hour.

Minimum qualifications for SLEO personnel:

  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States;
  • Must be a resident of the State of New Jersey during the term of appointment;
  • Must be at least 18 years of age;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey driver’s license;
  • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently and have a high school diploma or its equivalent;
  • Must be sound in body and of good health and be able to perform the physical functions of the duties assigned;
  • Must be of good moral character and shall not have been convicted of any crime or offense involving moral turpitude (dishonesty) or a crime or offense that would render him/her unfit for duty;
  • Must successfully undergo the same medical, physical, and psychological testing that is required of regular, full-time police officers.

Applicants being considered for appointment as a SLEO, and following a conditional offer of employment, are required to satisfy certain pre-conditions from the City of Englewood Human Resources Department and/or Police Department that include, but are not limited to:

1) Successfully complete a medical examination by a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.

2) Successfully complete a psychological screening as arranged by the City of Englewood.

3) Successfully pass a screening for intoxicants and/or controlled substances, consistent with the Attorney General Directive regarding drug testing for police officers and police officer candidates/applicants.

4) Successfully pass a rigorous background investigation initiated by the Chief of Police or designee, which shall be the same process used to screen applicants for the title of regular police officer.

5) All SLEO applicants shall be fingerprinted and subject to the aforesaid background investigation, or cannot be appointed.

6) Duties or assignments may not commence until the background investigation has been completed and approved.

7) The background investigation must minimally include the following areas, but should be as thorough and diligent as any other background investigation for the title of regular police officer, and the results presented to the Chief of Police for approval:

  • Verification of qualifying credentials;
  • A check for a criminal record;
  • A review of driving history;
  • Verification of at least three personal references;
  • A check of the NJ Domestic Violence Registry;
  • A check of the NJSP Central Drug Registry.
