Entry Exam Announcement 

The Wayne Police Department is pleased to announce its entry level police test. The hiring process will consist of a  written exam (50%), panel interview (50%) and physical agility test (pass/fail). 

The written exam and panel interview will be administered by the New Jersey State Police Chief's Association. The written test will be the NCJOSI2 entrance exam. Click the link for study guide material  Study Guide

The deadline for application shall be October 7th, 2024 at 11:59 PM. All applications must be made through Policeapp.com

The written examination will take place on Saturday, October 19th, 2024 @ 9:00 am. The location will be: Wayne PAL 1 PAL Drive Wayne, New Jersey 07470

The panel interviews will take place on November 4th and/or 5th at the Passaic County Police Academy.

The physical agility/swim test date, time and location will be announced at a later date.

No applications will be accepted at the Police Department.

GENERAL DUTIES

Some of the essential duties of a Wayne Township Police Officer include the following:

  • Patrol an assigned area
  • Respond to, take charge of, maintain order by directly controlling the scene in any emergency situation
  • Prepare and submit precise reports on investigations, arrests, motor vehicle crashes, and other police matters
  • Protect life, property, and the rights of citizens by enforcing State laws and County and Municipal ordinances

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be appointed as a Wayne Township Police Officer, applicants must meet the following minimum standards, which must be met on or before the established date of the written test.

  • He/She shall be a citizen of the United States.
  • He/She shall possess formal education or training as evidenced by a senior high school graduation certificate or an equivalency certificate.
  • He/She shall possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education at the time of filing an application for the upcoming written entrance exam on Oct. 19, 2024.
  • He/She must not have been convicted of any crime of the first, second, third or fourth degree as designated by the Criminal Code of New Jersey, or a crime or felony offense in any jurisdiction that involved moral turpitude or, at the time of application, is undergoing or awaiting court action of any kind in regard to such a crime of felony offense.
  • He/She shall be at least 21 and not more than 35 years of age at the time of appointment to a full time position within the Wayne Township Police Department. 
  • He/She must be able to obtain a State of New Jersey Law Enforcement license in accordance with Title 52 of the NJ Police Training Act.

SELECTION CRITERIA (FOR ALL QUALIFIED CANDIDATES):

  1. Written Examination 50% (a minimum score of 80% is needed to progress to the panel interview)[1]
  2. Panel Interview 50%  (a minimum score of 80% is needed to advance to the Physical Agility portion).
  3. Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement - The top 50 candidates who have successfully passed the written exam and the panel interview will progress to the physical agility/swim phase which will be graded on a pass/fail criteria.
  4. Complete Background Investigation. (Pass/Fail)
  5. Medical Examination. (Pass/Fail)
  6. Psychological Examination. (Pass/Fail)
  7. Drug Testing Through Urinalysis. (Pass/Fail)

 

[1] At the time of the written examination, candidates who possess a New Jersey Police Training Commission  

      Certification for Police Officer shall have five (5) additional points added to his/her overall score.


WRITTEN EXAMINATION NOTES & INSTRUCTIONS:

  • $95.00 Non-Refundable testing fee for the written exam is included in the initial registration cost ($35.00) for a total of $130.00
  • TEST LOCATION: Wayne PAL 1 PAL Drive Wayne, New Jersey 07470
  • TEST DATE & TIME: Saturday, October 19th, 2024 @ 9am. Please arrive early. No one will be admitted once that test has begun.
  • Have a current government-issued photo identification. No one will be admitted to the test without proper photo identification.
  • No electronic devices will be permitted into the testing area (including but not limited to smart watches, cellphones, tablets and laptops).
  • Note: Should the number of applicants exceed the seating area of the testing center, a second testing time may be required. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be notified via email of their testing time.
  • THERE ARE NO MAKEUP TEST DATES OR TIMES
  • Applicants will receive notification of their updated status via email to advise if they are advancing to the next phase.

Panel Interview

  • Location: Passaic County Police Academy, 214 Oldham Road, Wayne, NJ 07470
  • Date and time: November 4th and/or 5th (you will be notified of your exact date/time only upon achieving a passing score of 80% or above on the written entrance exam).
  • Cost: $125.00 Non-Refundable for applicants progressing to the panel interview phase
  • Those candidates who successfully complete the written examination with a score of 80% or better will progress to this phase of the process.
  • The panel interview will be administered by the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association. 
  • There will be no make up dates or changes to the schedule for the panel interview.
  • Applicants will receive notifications through email. 

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST/SWIM REQUIREMENT

The top 50 candidates who have successfully completed the Written and Panel Interview Phase with a score of 80 or higher will progress to the Physical Agility/ Swim Test Phase (no additional cost).  

Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement will be administered at a time and location TBA.

The top 50 candidates will be notified by email if they qualify for this phase of the testing process.

All other candidates who have successfully completed the written and oral examination phase but are not in the top 50 will be maintained on the appropriate list and may be called at a future time to be tested in the Physical Qualification Test/ Swim Requirement.

The Physical Agility/Swim Test is based on the New Jersey Police Training Commission Physical Requirements.

The Physical Qualification Test (PQT) Battery will consist of the following timed tests: Push Ups, Sit Ups, and 1.5 Mile Run, 300 Meter Run and Vertical Jump. Applicants unable to pass the PQT will be disqualified from the selection process.  This section of the test is pass/fail; no points will be given.

The Swim Test will consist of the following tests: Swim 50 yards any stroke without touching the bottom of the pool. Tread water for five (5) continuous minutes.

    • In accordance with the Stipulation of Settlement entered into with the NAACP, preference in recruitment and hiring of police officers shall be given to residents of Passaic, Essex, Bergen, Morris and Sussex Counties (combined) over nonresidents of those counties.
