ABOUT US
Northumberland is a small town in Northern New Hampshire, with approximately 2,000 year-round residents. The Police Department is historically busy, with a 2023 call volume of over 4000, while assisting numerous outside agencies. The Police Department currently employs four full-time Police Officer's, with approximately 6 part-time police officers and an administrative assistant.
JOB DESCRIPTION
A Northumberland Police Officer is responsible for maintaining public safety and order by local and state laws, responding to emergencies, and providing support to the community. This role involves patrolling the town, investigating crimes, enforcing laws, completing assigned paperwork, amongst numerous other responsibilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, integrity, and a commitment to serving and protecting the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Every applicant must be a citizen of the United States.
- Applicants shall be at least 18 years of age by the date of appointment.
- Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent meeting New Hampshire Standards.
- The applicant must not have any physical, mental, and/or medical impairments which would interfere with their ability to perform the essential functions of a police officer.
- Persons applying shall be of good moral character.
- Applicants shall not have a criminal record or serious motor vehicle record.
- Applicants shall meet all qualifying standards as set forth by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.
PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS
- A representative from the Northumberland Police Department will coordinate a physical agility test. Fitness standards can be found here.
AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATIONS
- Use of any narcotic, drug, or drug derivative within 2 years of application.
- Any deception during the application, hiring, or background process.
- Any felony conviction.
- Any tattoo that is visible on the applicant’s face or neck.

- Written Test (may be waived for certified officers)
- Physical Agility Test
- Oral Interview

- Applicant must possess a valid drivers' license
- Successful applicants must serve a probationary period of one year
