Under the supervision of ranking officers, police officers protect life and property, enforce criminal and traffic laws and local ordinances, conduct investigations, and perform related work as required.

- Vested in pension system after only 10 (ten) years of service, can begin to collect at age 60
- Full pension at age 50 after 25 years of service. Cola=2.25% non-compounding.

All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age by the end of the application period
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be a United States Citizen
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must have the ability to speak, read and write the English language
- Must have the ability to pass a physical examination given by a physician, a physical fitness/agility examination,
a written examination, an oral examination, a swim proficiency test, a drug screen, a psychological examination
given by a psychological test center, and a comprehensive background investigation
EXAMINATION WEIGHT
60% Written / 40% Oral
The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70 points. Candidates who are current East Providence residents may receive one point for each consecutive year of residency up to a maximum of five points.
Candidates who are veterans of the Armed Services may receive four points, or five points for a post-9/11 veteran-candidate, up to a maximum of five points.

*$5,000 New officer bonus will be paid to the officer in the following manner:
· The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $2500 upon completion of the probation period for new police officers.
· The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $1500 upon completion of 2 years of service.
· The City of East Providence will pay the police officer $1000 upon completion of 3 years of service.
