What Is The Alternate Route Basic Course For Police Officers?
This program was designed to give individuals interested in becoming police officers, the opportunity to attend a police training academy at their own expense, prior to being hired by a police department. Although successful completion of the program does not assure a participant a position in law enforcement, graduates will have received training from a certified police academy, and are able to pursue employment as a certified police officer. The CCCPA Alternate Route Program written test is the only recognized and accepted written test for the CCCPA Alternate Route Program.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
In order to qualify for entrance into the Camden County College Police Academy Alternate Route Program, candidates must:
- Must be at least 18 years of age and not over 35 at the completion of the program (for municipal police officers).
- Must be at least 18 years of age (for Sheriff's Officers and College Campus Police Officers).
- Must have completed 60 college credits or 2 years of active military service. A copy of your DD214 Form must be supplied as proof of military service.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must be a resident of the State of New Jersey
- Must be of good moral character and not convicted of any criminal offense.
- Must be able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently
- Must be in good health, sound physical condition and able to participate in a rigorous physical training program.
- Must have a valid, unrestricted New Jersey Driver License by time of class
- Must have medical insurance. A copy of your insurance card is required as proof of coverage.

Study guides for the written exam maybe purchased Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30am-2:30pm. The cost of the guide is $20.00 and must be in the form of money order or cashiers check. Study guides may be picked up at 420 North Woodbury-Turnersville Road, Blackwood, NJ.

Selection Process Overview
- The Written Test will be administered at the Camden County College Regional Emergency Training Center on Saturday, September 14, 2024. Candidates must be in line by 08:00 am.
- The Top 30 highest scores on the Written Test will continue in the Selection Process. After the results are tabulated, you will be advised of your score and your eligible status. A passing score will qualify you to continue on to the Physical Ability Test.
- Formal Applications will be distributed by email after the Written Test and must be returned at the Physical Ability Test site, during check-in.
- The Physical Ability Test will be administered at the Camden County College (Police Academy) to be announced. Candidates must be in line by 8:00 am.
- A Medical Certification signed by your Physician is required to participate in the Physical Ability Test. The test consists of five (5) pass/fail events. Candidates who pass all five events of the test will be eligible to advance and may be offered the opportunity to participate in the Oral Interview Phase of the Selection Process.
- The Oral Interviews will be conducted at the Camden County College Police Academy on October 7, 2024 and October 8, 2024.
- The Preliminary Ranking will be released on or about October 14, 2024. The Preliminary Ranking is based on the results of each candidate’s performance on the Written Test, Physical Ability Test and Oral Interview.
- Candidates on the Preliminary Ranking List will be selected as needed to participate in the Psychological Examination and Background Investigation Phases.
- Only those candidates who successfully complete all of these phases will receive a Final Ranking and will be considered for appointment into the Basic Course for Police Officer.
- The next Basic Class for Police Officer class#90 will begin on January 2025 TBA.
