TOMS RIVER POLICE DEPARTMENT

Part Time- Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO)


This is to advise that the position of Class II SLEO is now available at the Toms River Police Department.   The Job Description and Qualifications are as follows:

The Special Police Officer, under the direction of the Chief of Police, shall conduct armed safety and security duties at Town Hall and at public and private schools within the Township of Toms River, conduct supplementary patrols of the beach areas during the summer season, and perform any other police duties as directed by the Chief or his/her designee.

Job Functions and Duties:

The following are essential functions for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Maintain a security presence in and around Town Hall to:

1) ensure the safety of Town Hall employees

2) prevent disturbances

3) monitor video surveillance systems

4). provide information to the public and employees as needed

5). make periodic, randomly scheduled rounds in and around the building during  each shift to:

  • ensure the staff and public are safe
  • locate, document, and mitigate any safety or security concerns
  • physically check all exterior doors and windows to ensure they are properly secured and that all emergency exit doors are functioning properly and clear of debris on the inside and outside.

4). provide information to the staff as needed

5). make periodic, randomly scheduled rounds in and around buildings during  each shift to:

  • ensure the students, staff and public are safe
  • locate, document, and mitigate any safety or security concerns
  • physically check all exterior doors and windows to ensure they are properly secured and that all emergency exit doors are functioning properly and clear of debris on the inside and outside.
  • Conduct limited patrols of the beach and nearby areas during the summer season and respond to calls for service and emergencies as directed, as needed to ensure public safety.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The applicant must possess a valid NJ Police Training Commission SLEO II Certification or Regular Full Certification.
  • The applicant must possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
  • The applicant must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • The applicant must be a resident of the State of New Jersey during his or her term of appointment to this position.
  • The applicant must be able to read, write, and speak the English language with reasonable proficiency and possess a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • The applicant must be sound in body and good health, which must be certified by a physician licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey.
  • The applicant must be of good moral character and must not have been convicted of any offense involving dishonesty as would make the applicant unfit to perform his or her duties.
  • The applicant must be physically capable of performing the functions of the position in accordance with the Police Training Commission (PTC).
