Certified Police Officers
LATERAL:
- Have been employed as a police officer in the State of Connecticut, AND
- Have NOT had more than three (3) years separation from a law enforcement unit.
COMPARATIVE (Out of State Certified Police Officer):
- Have completed at least two (2) years of full-time employment as a police officer, AND
- Have NOT had more than three (3) years of separation from a law enforcement unit.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under direction of a superior officer, protects lives and property of citizens. Provides services to the Public and maintains the peace, protects the rights of persons and property, and enforces all laws and ordinances coming under the jurisdiction of the Police Department. Under normal conditions, interacts with the public in a congenial and positive manner.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (LATERAL ENTRY CANDIDATES):
- P.O.S.T. CERTIFICATION: A valid State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council – Police Officer (P.O.S.T.) Certification or equivalent, which must be current at the time of appointment. A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
- DRIVER’S LICENSE: A valid driver’s license is required. A COPY OF THE LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
- AGILITY TEST: Must pass a physical agility performance test administered by this department.
- PHYSICAL CONDITION: Must pass a thorough medical examination.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (COMPARATIVE LATERAL CANDIDATES):
- EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.
- DRIVER’S LICENSE: A valid driver’s license is required. A COPY OF THE LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
- AGILITY TEST: Must pass a physical agility performance test administered by this department.
- CERTIFICATION: Must be a certified sworn Police Officer in the United States or having served as a Military Police Officer for a minimum of two years. If you are a Military Police Officer, you must either be actively serving or honorably discharged within the last two years. A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION. ALL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE VERIFIED. A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION WILL BE CONDUCTED. FALSIFICATION OF ANY INFORMATION WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY YOU FROM FURTHER PARTICIPATION IN THE RECRUITMENT AND TESTING PROCESS.
EXAMINATION:
Open to all applicants who meet the above qualifications. The examination process will consist of rating your training and experience, a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. It will also include a physical agility test, a drug test, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, an interview with the Chief of Police, a physical exam, and a working test/probationary period of one year. All parts of examination are designed to determine the ability of applicants to learn and perform the duties of a Police Officer in a multi-culturally diverse environment. This examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, municipal laws, rules and regulations.
