LATERAL:

  • Have been employed as a police officer in the State of Connecticut, AND
  • Have NOT had more than three (3) years separation from a law enforcement unit.

COMPARATIVE (Out of State Certified Police Officer):

  • Have completed at least two (2) years of full-time employment as a police officer, AND
  • Have NOT had more than three (3) years of separation from a law enforcement unit.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Appointed by the Town Manager and under operational control of a Resident State Trooper, protects lives and property of citizens, with a strong emphasis on community policing.  Provides services to and establishes relationships with the public, maintains the peace, protects the rights of persons and property, and enforces all laws and ordinances within the appropriate jurisdiction.  Under normal conditions, interacts with the public in a congenial and positive manner.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (LATERAL ENTRY CANDIDATES):

  • P.O.S.T. CERTIFICATION:  A valid State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council – Police Officer (P.O.S.T.) Certification, which must be current at the time of appointment.  A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
  • DRIVER’S LICENSE:  A valid driver’s license is required.  A COPY OF THE LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
  • AGILITY TEST: (If applicable)
  • PHYSICAL CONDITION:  Must pass a thorough medical examination.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (COMPARATIVE LATERAL CANDIDATES):

  • EDUCATION: High School diploma or GED.
  • DRIVER’S LICENSE: A valid driver’s license is required.  A COPY OF THE LICENSE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
  • AGILITY TEST: Must pass a physical agility performance test (If applicable).
  • CERTIFICATION:  Must be a certified police officer in the United States.  A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION. 
  • RESIDENCY:  All employees must reside within a twenty-five (25) mile radius of Killingly.

ALL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE VERIFIED.  A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION WILL BE CONDUCTED. FALSIFICATION OF ANY INFORMATION WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY CANDIDATES FROM FURTHER PARTICIPATION IN THE RECRUITMENT AND TESTING PROCESS.

EXAMINATION:

Open to all applicants who meet the above qualifications.  The examination process will consist of rating your training and experience, a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof.  It will also include a physical agility test (if applicable), a drug test, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, a physical medical exam, a drug screening, an interview with the Town Manager and senior Resident State Trooper, and a working test/probationary period of one year.  All parts of examination are designed to determine the ability of applicants to learn and perform the duties of a police officer in a multi-culturally diverse environment.  The examination and employment process is subject to all federal, state, municipal laws, rules and regulations.
