State Capitol Police Officers are highly trained, well equipped professionals. Officers meet and maintain all police officer certification standards. In addition to police related training, the Connecticut General Assembly supports continuing personal education through a tuition reimbursement program.

Units
Training Unit: The Connecticut State Capitol Police Department Training Unit consists of one Sergeant who reports to the Operations Support Commander, a Lieutenant. The Training Sergeant is responsible for ensuring that officers remain certified to perform their sworn duties. This is accomplished by scheduling a minimum of 40 hours of mandatory training for each officer on an annual basis, a departmental standard that far exceeds state requirements. This includes recording, scheduling, and researching current training issues. The Training Sergeant also coordinates career development, police applicant background investigations and the field training program.
Security Technicians: The Connecticut State Capitol Police Department has civilian members of the department assigned to the position of Security Technicians. Security Technicians are assigned to strategic entry points on the State Capitol Campus. The Security Technicians have a background in law enforcement and private security. They assist in creating a safe environment for the legislators, staff, and citizens.
Bike Patrol: The Connecticut State Capitol Police Department Bike Patrol Squad was formed in 2003 thanks to the efforts of Chief William Morgan and Officer First Class Mark Baldwin.The Bike Patrol Squad focuses on assisting the public, crime prevention, deterrent patrol checks and special event assistance. The Bike Patrol allows for greater visibility and faster response for service.
Honor Guard: The Connecticut State Capitol Police Department (SCPD) Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit comprised of volunteer officers who have committed themselves to the time and training required for this specialized duty. They are highly respected for their attention to detail and precision in representing the SCPD and all its members.
K-9 Unit: The Connecticut State Capitol Police Department K-9 Unit was formed in 2014 as part of security upgrades made to the State Capitol Campus. Because of their specialized training in explosives detection, the K-9 teams plays a significant role in creating a safe and secure environment in which to conduct the legislative process. The K-9 teams accomplish this by conducting security sweeps and searching packages that come into the Legislative Office Building and State Capitol Building. The K-9's visible presence acts as deterrent to those who seek to do us harm.

The candidate will be eliminated from the process upon failure to meet any one of the testing components outlined above. The officer testing and selection process for the State Capitol Police Department ranges from approximately two (2) to nine (9) months long.
Candidates not offered employment or placed on the eligibility list resulting from this testing process may reapply in a future selection process for the State Capitol Police Department.
