Animal Control Officer

 

The City of Falls Church Police Department is recruiting for a full-time, Animal Control Officer.

The City is an independent city six miles from the nation's capital. It’s small in area (2.2 square miles) and population (about 16,000 people). The selected candidate will be responsible working shiftwork of intermediate difficulty in performing paraprofessional and technical duties within the Police Department. 

Responsibilities

  • Enforces city and state laws pertaining to animal control, captures sick and injured small wildlife; issues warnings and summonses and provides relevant court testimony in the prosecution of violators.
  • Investigates all animal bite reports.
  • Investigates all animal complaints including those of uncontrolled animals and cruelty to animals; advises on legal resources or makes dispositions in accordance with findings and applicable resources
  • Responds to citizen inquiries; verifies licenses; files offense and incident reports and maintains service logs; reviews records to identify owners of impounded animals
  • Maintains sound relationships with the public while advocating for the welfare of animals.
  • Works in inclement weather or environmental conditions.

 

Qualifications

  • At least 21 years of age at hire with a valid driver’s license
  • Be of good moral character and have never been convicted of a felony; or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, perjury, or false statement.
  • Complete Basic Training (120 hours) approved by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Public Safety Aide training.
  • Be able to successfully complete and maintain all certification requirements for the Public Safety Aide position.
  • Have basic computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
  • Mandatory and comprehensive background checks to include all past employment and fingerprint criminal history.
  • High School Diploma and completion or GED equivalent.
  • Non-user of any tobacco product (including Vape)
  • 20/20 corrected vision. Near/night vision, Color blindness, peripheral test clearance.
  • Excellent physical condition and acceptable physical medical examination.

Disqualifying Factors

  • The Police Department may reject any applicant for any arrest, plea or conviction that occurred at any age for any offense including misdemeanors.
  • Conviction, plea of guilty or no contest/Alford to a felony or any offense if committed in Virginia would be deemed a felony.
  • Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor committed as an adult to include DUI.
  • Positive result on any pre-employment drug screening.
  • More than one moving traffic violation within 12 months or two moving traffic violations within 24 months of the date of application.

Hours

This is a full-time position, working shiftwork, totaling 40 hours per week.

Salary range is $50,899 to $67,467 depending on experience and qualifications.
