What is the role of a Special Law Enforcement Officer Class 1?
SLEO I are authorized to perform routine traffic detail, spectator control and similar duties. SLEO I have the power to issue summonses for violations of municipal ordinances and parking offenses.
- SLEO I are prohibited from carrying and using a firearm and no SLEO I shall be assigned any duties that may require the carrying or use of a firearm. SLEO I are authorized to carry the less lethal weapons while on duty only after demonstrating proficiency in the use of these weapons with the same frequency as regular police officers.
- SLEO I are authorized to utilize handcuffs and other restraining devices consistent with this department’s directives and only after demonstrating proficiency in the use of these devices.
- SLEO I are prohibited from engaging in any high-speed response or vehicular pursuit.
- SLEO I duties include but are not limited to: a. Traffic direction. b. Parking enforcement. c. Beach patrol. d. Pedestrian crossings. e. Security/spectator control at special events. f. Municipal buildings and properties security. g. Arrestee processing. h. Detention center management. i. Detainee transportation (in building). j. Municipal court security. k. Community notification.
- SLEO I shall not be primary response personnel.
- SLEO 1 classes will be held at the Ocean County Police Academy, and we have 5 spots reserved for the May into June class. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 1700-2100 and will run for approximately 4 weeks. Recruits are now being trained on OC Spray, Baton and CPR.
Minimum qualifications for SLEO personnel:
- Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
- Must be a resident of the State of New Jersey during the term of appointment.
- Must maintain a valid NJ driver's license.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be able read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently and have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Must be sound in body and of good health and be able to perform the physical functions of the duties assigned.
- Must be of good moral character and shall not have been convicted of any crime or offense involving moral turpitude.
