OLD TAPPAN POLICE DEPARTMENT

POLICE OFFICER

The Borough of Old Tappan, Bergen County is currently accepting applications for the position of full-time police officer. 

All applicants for the Old Tappan Police Department must meet the following minimum qualifications to participate in the recruitment process. Failure to meet any of these qualifications will automatically disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

At the time of application, applicants must be:

• Certified in Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO) by the NJ Police Training Commission (PTC) OR
• Currently enrolled in a Police Training Commission (PTC) certified New Jersey Police Academy, OR
• Certified as a NJ Special Law Enforcement Officer Class II (SLEO II) AND meet the requirements set forth by the NJ Police Training Commission (PTC) to be eligible for a waiver to Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO). At least one year from date of certification.

In addition, at the time of the application, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• 18 years of age and less than 35 years of age at the time of appointment
• A licensed driver with a valid New Jersey driver's license at the time of appointment
• A citizen of the United States and a resident of New Jersey at the time of appointment
• 60 college credits from an accredited college or university or an honorable discharge from active duty from any branch of the United States Military
• The candidate shall be of good moral character and have a record free of any conviction of any crime or indictable offense or any crime or offense involving moral turpitude 

Additional Requirements:

• Applicant must pass an oral interview
• Complete and pass an extensive background check
• Complete and pass a psychological examination
• Complete and pass a medical examination
• Complete and pass a complete drug and alcohol screening
