These officers have the same authority and arrest powers as a full time police officer while they are employed and on-duty. In addition to the above responsibilities they have the responsibility of carrying a firearm.
The training is intense and is conducted at the Cape May County Police Academy. This hiring process is primarily intended for fully trained Class 2 Officers. However, if an applicant is not trained and positions are still available, they will be enrolled in the next available SLEO Academy as long as they meet all of the minimum requirements. The Special Officer Class II consists of over 460 hours of training mandated by the Police Training Commission. This course covers similar material as the basic class. Upon graduation, students will be PTC certified as a Class Two Special Law Enforcement Officer.
The course of study includes, history of law enforcement, the NJ court system, community responsibility, criminal law, arrest search and seizure, use of force, patrol vehicle operations, motor vehicle law, first responder emergency rescue, firearms, baton, chemical agents, self-defense, patrol tactics, criminal law, communications, report writing, court room testimony, military drill, and physical fitness and additional law enforcement training. Graduating Officers can apply for college credits at Atlantic Cape Community College and receive full New Jersey State Special Law Enforcement Certification at graduation.
SALARY
$20 per hour (While in the academy)
$23 per hour (with Class 2 certification)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Citizenship: Be a United States citizen
Residency: Be a New Jersey resident at the time of appointment
Read & Write: Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently
Age: Be at least 18 years old and typically not older than 35
Education: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Driver's License: Have a valid New Jersey driver's license
Physical Fitness: Pass a physical agility test including elements like vertical jump, sit-ups, push-ups, 300-meter run, and a 1.5-mile run
Background Check: Pass a thorough background investigation demonstrating good moral character
Psychological Evaluation: Pass a psychological examination
Medical Examination: Pass a medical examination including a drug test
Key Points:
A positive drug test will result in the following:
- Dropped from consideration for employment
- Reported to the Central Drug Registry maintained by the New Jersey State Police
- Preclude the applicant from being considered for future law enforcement employment for a period of two (2) years from the date of testing
- If currently a sworn law enforcement officer, notification to the officer’s employing agency and the officer will be terminated from employment and permanently barred from future law enforcement employment in New Jersey
- *Refusal to submit to a drug test shall result in no longer being considered for law enforcement employment
