FULL TIME POLICE OFFICER

The Chester Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of full time Police Officer. We welcome experienced New Jersey police officers, New Jersey police academy recruits and graduates, & those who possess a waiver-eligible NJ Police Training Commission SLEO-II certification with one year experience. 

NO out of state waiver applications will be accepted.

Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications and submit their application by 2/15/2025.

 

About the Chester Police Department and Community It Serves

Department overview:

  • Staffed by 22 fulltime sworn officers, 2 SLEO-II and 2 SLEO-III
  • Provides law enforcement services for Chester Township and Chester Borough
  • Officers patrol a combined 31 square miles; comprised of neighborhoods, farmlands, downtown shopping district, shopping malls, and major state highway and county roadways

 

GENERAL DUTIES

Some of the essential duties of a Chester Police Officer include:

  • Patrolling assigned area(s)
  • Responding to, taking charge of, & maintaining order by directly controlling the scene in any emergency situation
  • Preparing & submitting precise reports on investigations, arrests, motor vehicle crashes, & other police matters
  • Protect life, property, & the rights of citizens by enforcing State laws. As well as County and Municipal ordinances
  • Ability to work quickly & accurately in situations where there is pressure or emotional strain

 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • United States citizen
  • New Jersey resident
  • Must be of good moral character, & shall not have been convicted of any crime or offense
  • Possess a valid New Jersey Driver’s License, with a relatively clean driving record
  • Read, write, & understand in the English language
  • Possess a current New Jersey Police Training Commission BCPO or SLEO-II (waiver eligible) certification or be enrolled in a New Jersey Police Academy Alternate Route Training Program.
  • Associate’s Degree, or higher from an accredited college or university, or (4) military service with an honorable discharge.
  • Licensed, or the ability to obtain a license as a New Jersey Police Officer

 

HIRING PROCESS

All qualified applicants must complete the following prior to appointment:

  • Resume Review
  • Oral Interview(s)
  • Background Investigation
  • Medical/Psychological Exams
  • Drug Testing

 

 

The filing deadline is February 15, 2025.  Interviews may start, on a rolling basis, prior to the posted deadline

Applicants who are transferring from a current New Jersey law enforcement agency, must have a minimum of two years since the time of their appointment to that agency or bear the responsibility for any costs incurred by the former employer under Title 40A:14-178

In addition, transfer applicants must provide a waiver releasing their current department’s complete disciplinary record to this agency for review in accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:17B-247.
