Police Officer Requirements:

Notice: Applicants who have used an illegal drug in the past two (2) years will not be considered for the position.

1. For Police Officer Applicants only: Applicants must be at least 20 years of age.
2. For Police Officer Applicants only: Applicants must be no more than 40 years of age by the date of hire to qualify for PERF.
3. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
4. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record to allow for proper insurability.
5. Upon request, applicants must provide fingerprints that are subject to NCIC/IDACS clearance.
6. Applicants shall have no convictions in the past five years that have not been expunged for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.
7. Applicants shall have no convictions in the past five years that have not been expunged for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, or operating a vehicle with blood alcohol content of .08% or above.
8. Applicants shall have no felony convictions that have not been expunged.
9. Applicants shall have no convictions in the past five years that have not been expunged for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
10. For Police Officer Applicants only: Applicants must be able to pass the physical fitness exit standards adopted by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy:



Required Physical Test: Standards

  • Vertical Jump: 16 Inches
  • One Minute Sit-ups: 29
  • 300 Meter Run: 71 Seconds
  • Maximum Push-ups: 25
  • 1.5 Mile Run: 16 Minutes 28 Seconds



Hiring Process:

The hiring process includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Written Aptitude Test 
  • Physical Agility Testing
  • Executive Board Interview

After an offer of employment is extended, the following will be completed:

  • Background Examination with Polygraph Exam
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Physical Evaluation
  • Successful completion of Probationary Year, including completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, and Field Training Program.



Salary and Benefits:

  • 2024 Patrol Officer Salary: $70,000.00-$89,600.00
  • Specialty Pay…… up to $3000.00 per year
  • Clothing Allowance……$900.00 per year
  • Overtime Compensation Benefits
  • Shift Differential Wage Incentive      2nd Shift (2:30 pm - 11:00 pm……….. 5%                                                                      
  • 3rd Shift (10:30 pm – 7:00 am………..10% 
  • Vacation Time of 2-5 weeks in addition to Paid Holidays
  • College Incentive Pay (up to $2850.00 annually)
  • Military Incentive Pay (up to $1424.00 annually)
  • Life Insurance/Health Insurance (City covers on average 87% of employee healthcare premiums)
  • Employees and dependents covered by city health insurance can utilize Employer Health Partners at Nexus Park and receive medical care services with no co-pay.
  • On-site police workout/fitness room
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 20-Year Retirement Eligibility– 52% of First-Class Patrolman salary (max of 76% at 32 years of service) City pays 50% of employees share in addition to City’s cost.
  • Officers are permitted to have beards and visible tattoos.
  • Patrol officers work 8.5 hour shifts and receive every other weekend off
  • Officers are assigned “take-home” patrol vehicle use in Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, and Shelby Counties.

(The Chief of Police may authorize or require officers to take an assigned department vehicle to his or her residence, which could include personal use.)
