BERKLEE COLLEGE POLICE DEPARTMENT 

IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR  POLICE OFFICERS

 

The Berklee Police Department has set forth rigorous standards for becoming a police officer that are in keeping with those outlined by the MPTC, POSTC, and the Massachusetts Special State Police Requirements. We encourage those applicants that meet and exceed the minimum qualifications to apply, the following are required:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be a United States citizen 
  • Applicant must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Applicant must be at least 21 years of age
  • Applicant must have an active Massachusetts Driver’s License 
  • Applicant must have an active Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm (M.G.L.c.140, section 131) (Without restriction)
  • Entry Level Applicant must successfully pass the Human Resources Division (HRD) comprehensive medical exam
  • Entry Level Applicant must successfully pass the Human Resources Division (HRD) Physical Ability Test (PAT)
  • Entry Level Applicant will be required to attend and complete a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Course
  • Applicant must be able to obtain and retain their POST (Peace Officers Standards and Training) certification; their Special State Police powers in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63; and their Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs powers
  • Applicant must be eligible for appointment as Special State Police Officer in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63
  • Applicant will be required to successfully complete a period of “field training” and show their proficiency in the proper use of department issued firearms, equipment, and vehicles
  • Successful candidate(s) will be required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, a pre-employment psychological examination, and a pre-employment medical exam
  • As a condition of employment, the candidate will need to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19 

 

SALARY:

The Berklee Police Department is pleased to offer a competitive and comprehensive salary and benefits package. We offer a three-phase salary system for officers that are recruited and sent to an academy. The first phase is the salary earned during the academy itself, the second phase is the salary earned during the probationary period, and the third phase is the salary earned going forward as an officer. Our department personnel currently receive an annual 2.5% salary adjustment. The salary is broken down below as follows:

  • Recruit Officer: $26.50 per hour
  • Probationary Police Officer: $31.75 per hour
  • Police Officer: $33.00 per hour

 

TESTING REQUIREMENTS:

The Berklee Police Department will accept a score of 70% or higher as passing on the PES Entry Exam.

 

HIRING PROCESS:

The Berklee Police Department hiring process is comprehensive, after completing the examination portion, the following is what a candidate can expect:

  1. The first step is to take and pass the Police Exam Solutions Entry Exam with a score of 70% or better, then apply via PoliceApp
  2. The Department will review applicants and may request materials such as resume and/or cover letter
  3. The Department will invite applicants to attend a Physical Fitness Test (Cooper Standards)
  4. The Department will invite applicants who pass the PT test to their first Oral Interview before a panel of department members
  5. The Department will invite applicants who pass the oral board to complete a thorough Background Investigation
  6. The Department will invite applicants who bass the background investigation successfully to a Second Oral Interview before the Command Staff
  7. The Department will then inform applicants of their Comprehensive HRD Medical Exam date
  8. The Department will then inform applicants who pass their medical exam of their Comprehensive PAT Exam date
  9. The Department will then inform applicants who pass their PAT exam of their Comprehensive Psychological Exam date
  10. The Department will then notify the applicant of their Academy location and the date of their Pre-Academy Physical Fitness Exam (Cooper Standards)
  11. Attendance and completion of an MPTC Recruit Officer Course at an MPTC/MPTC Authorized Academy
