General Statement of Job

Community Service Officers are civilian, non-sworn employees of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office that work in coordination with the Patrol Division performing a variety of routine non-critical public safety tasks. Such tasks include but not limited to parking ordinances; keeping official records; response to citizen requests for service; community policing activities; traffic control activities, non-emergency response to animal control requests, and other police service functions within Walton County.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma/GED equivalent
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Prior Law Enforcement experience preferred

Essential Job Functions

  • Regular and prompt job attendance.

 

Performs limited law enforcement duties:

  • Enforces parking laws
  • Investigate minor and non-life-threatening traffic crashes
  • Performs traffic direction and control duties
  • Complete written reports concerning lost or recovered property, missing vehicle registration, and other non-criminal offense
  • Assist motorists on public roadways and parking lots
  • Perform Crossing Guard duties
  • Assist with Funeral escorts
  • Perform Crime Prevention and Community Policing activities
  • Prepares written reports and appears in court when necessary
  • Actively participates in required training and educational sessions as a student.

 

Performs community service functions:

  • Assists injured and ill person to the extent which they are trained
  • Connects individuals in need of service with local, regional, and federal assistance programs

 

Performs support to the Sheriff’s Office

  • Provides over the counter information to the public
  • Provides preventive maintenance on Agency vehicles by way of cleaning and minor maintenance such as adding oil, maintaining tire pressure, checking fluid levels, etc
  • Maintains office equipment by way of cleaning and performing minor maintenance such as toner cartridge replacement; photocopies materials
  • Drafts various letters
  • Pickup and delivery duties for the Agency

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws and ordinances
  • Leadership skills – Be supportive and give directions to accomplish the Sheriff’s goals and objectives.
  • Interpersonal skills – demonstrate congenial, respectful, and productive behaviors and attitudes towards others in working relationships and situations.
  • Communication skills – be able to express ideas and effectively communicate information clearly, concise and effectively, to citizens and subordinates in writing and on a two-way radio
  • Situational awareness skills – be aware and alert to the surrounding conditions and situations and be able to adapt to unexpected changes in situations to successfully and safely complete the task at hand
  • Ability to speak before groups, articulate ideas, and effectively communicate in a well-planned, organized, and clear manner.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate a motor vehicle while being mindful of surroundings and radio traffic
  • Ability to use and interpret street maps.
  • Ability to complete and prepare reports, documenting the facts and actions regarding law enforcement incidents conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style
  • Ability to problem solve –look beyond surface issues to identify and analyze problems and develop effective responses and solutions to resolve problems.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, lifting and moving equipment, supplies and injured persons, climbing stairs, and performing life-saving and rescue procedures.
