JOB SUMMARY:
Answers and responds to emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency calls for police, fire, EMS, public works, animal control, and water service. Evaluates and prioritizes the needs of the caller, dispatches the appropriate personnel, provides pre-arrival instructions (when needed), and while operating various types of communications equipment. Other duties include entering information into federal, state, and local databases and completing all associated paperwork, attending various training courses, remaining current with communication rules and regulations, and interacting with other City employees and citizens.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Dispatches emergency and non-emergency public service personnel.
  • Receives requests for public service assistance.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls.
  • Maintains communication with other governmental agencies.
  • Completes reports.
  • Enters, modifies, cancels, and retrieves data on computer.
  • Updates files.
  • Monitors weather conditions.
  • Activates civil defense sirens when necessary.
  • Performs general housekeeping and maintenance of the communications center and equipment.
  • Monitors and responds to all communication devices.
  • Maintains data logs.
  • Trains other communications personnel when required.
  • Monitors the closing and opening of streets and the turning on and off water throughout the city; relays information to proper authority.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an appropriate authority.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age with a high school education or the equivalent.
  • Must have no prior convictions of any felony; no misdemeanor convictions of Class A, or Class B within the past ten years.
  • Must be able to pass a detailed background investigation and a polygraph examination.
  • Must be able to pass a psychological examination.
  • Must be available to work shifts and be available for emergency callout 24 hours a day.
  • Must be able to pass entrance exam.
  • Must be able to hear, with or without assistance, at a level sufficient to communicate effectively with others and by telephone or other communication device.
  • Must be able to type 35 wpm.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

 

FUNCTIONAL ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Eight hours or more of sitting; constant data entry on computer during 8-hour shift. Must be able to communicate effectively. Must maintain static posture during shift. Repetitive motion of upper extremity. Environment is dark and quiet due to nature of position.

Must pass all pre-employment processes including but not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.
