Minimum Requirements
Applicants must comply with the following basic qualification standards:
- Possess Certification from the NJ Police Training Commission for the Basic Course for Special law enforcement officer Class II
- United States Citizen that possesses a valid driver’s license
- Age 18 or older
- Possess a High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Be of good moral character
- Good physical condition
- Pass Background Investigation, Medical Examination, Psychological Profile
Job Description/General Duties:
These officers have the same authority and arrest powers as a full time police officer while they are employed. In addition to the above responsibilities they have the responsibility of carrying a firearm.
The training is intense and requires 471 hours of training at the Cape May County Police Academy. The academy runs two courses for Class II Officers. A part-time academy during the winter months (December to April) is held three evenings per week and most Saturdays. A second class is held for eight weeks from the beginning of May to the end of June with classes running six days per week. Based on the needs of the Department, the date your application was submitted, and your ability to attend, you may be considered to attend either the winter or spring academy.. Thus, we suggest your application be submitted as soon as possible.
The course of study includes, history of law enforcement, the NJ court system, community responsibility, criminal law, arrest search and seizure, use of force, patrol vehicle operations, motor vehicle law, first responder emergency rescue, firearms, PR-24 or expandable baton , chemical agents, self-defense, patrol tactics, criminal law, communications, report writing, court room testimony, military drill, and physical fitness and additional law enforcement training. Graduating Officers can apply for college credits at Atlantic Cape Community College and receive full New Jersey State Special Law Enforcement Certification at graduation.
About Our Department
The Lower Township Police Department consists of 50 full time sworn officers and up to 10 SLEO Class II officers. Our year round population is just over 21,000 and in the summer months over 102, 000. We have approximately 45,000 calls for service a year. We are a four time NJSACOP Accredited Agency. We are hiring up to 5 SLEO II officers and specifically interested in the immediate hire of anyone already academy trained that meets our hiring criteria.
