About Our Department

The Rutland City Police Department is a fast-paced, community-focused agency dedicated to proactive policing and public safety. Our three divisions include:
Patrol – The backbone of our operations, handling over 13,500 calls for service annually.
Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) – Investigating major crimes and complex cases.
Community Outreach – A unique community-driven initiative addressing the root causes of crime through partnerships and outreach.

With a patrol area of 7.67 square miles, Rutland City has a permanent population of 15,851, which doubles to over 30,000 daily visitors and residents.

Minimum Qualifications

To join our team, you must:
✔️ Be at least 18 years old
✔️ Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
✔️ Have a clean criminal record (no felonies, serious misdemeanors, or reckless driving history)
✔️ Pass all required written, physical, and psychological evaluations
✔️ Successfully complete a background check, polygraph, and interview process
✔️ Meet medical and vision standards (20/20 corrected vision)
✔️ Possess a valid driver’s license

💰 Salary & Pay Incentives

  • $55,390 ($26.63/hr) – Pre-Academy & Academy Rate
  • $64,022 ($31.25/hr) – Upon Level III Academy Graduation
  • Higher starting salary for certified officers (VT Level III & out-of-state waiver applicants) – $31.25 to $39.05/hr
